FUNGUS

FROM THE TERRITORY TO MANUFACTURE

This exhibition is focused on biofabrication processes based on fungal mycelium and lignocellulosic substrates, fundamentally based on research carried out in recent years by the Laboratorio de Biofabricación UC laboratory of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. The exhibition seeks to show how these elements of the fungi kingdom, a fundamental part of nature, can be part of the manufacturing processes for construction components and industrial objects for daily use, based on mycelium and cellulose-rich substrates.

Neither animal nor plant, the fungi kingdom is one of the most diverse on the planet. Mushrooms have a visible body (sporocarp), like the mushrooms we usually see, but that is only a small part; while, under the surface or inside the trees, a network of hyphae grows and branches, microscopic threads that constitute its vital root during the vegetative stage. This part is called mycelium, and it what this exhibition is based on.

In the Design Gallery, the exhibition explains and illustrates the cycle of gathering, cultivating and manufacturing objects. Thus, it has five stations: Forest, Laboratory, Factory, Exhibition and Explanation. The most complete knowledge of the biological cycle of fungi, their evolutionary stages and their usefulness in daily life, will enable us to fully understand the importance that these have as the regenerators par excellence of the natural world; fungi are in the decomposition of bodies and plants, but they also represent rebirth, a new beginning.

About the curator

Francisco Chateau Gannon is an Architect, Scholar and Researcher at Escuela de Arquitectura of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Currently, he serves as director of the Laboratory of Models and Prototypes FADEU, and since 2017 he has participated as Coordinator of Laboratorio de Biofabricación UC.

Free admission | Limited capacity

MOBILITY PASS | Attendees older than 15 years of age must present their mobility pass at the entrance to the cultural centre in accordance with current health regulations. People without a mobility pass will only be able to attend on Tuesdays between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm and on Thursdays between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. All of the above in accordance with the provisions of the health authority within the framework of the Step by Step plan.
