PORTRAITS OF THE REGION

Inspired by the concept of “photographic commission”, the exhibition Ñuble. Portraits of the Region” is the result of the commission to five authors to portray this territory from their respective points of view. Curated by the photographer Jorge Gronemeyer, the photographers Paz Errázuriz, Andrés Figueroa, Sebastián MejíaFernando Melo and Barbara Oettinger,  and registred, through their different views, landscapes, society, culture heritage, the world of work, the urban landscape and the environmental devastation of Ñuble.

The exhibition is proposed as a counterpoint to the photographic commission made 91 years ago in the same south-central area of Chile, for the creation of the Album Ñuble 1929, which was part of the Chilean representation at the Ibero-American Exhibition in Seville and had as its objective to show the world those elements that characterized this territory.

In this exhibition, the diversity of viewpoints that each author provides enhances the exercise of covering a subject collectively. In the photographs it is possible to appreciate the different interests, concepts, origins, styles and techniques, understanding the exhibition as a common reflection and project. In the images that make up the exhibition, Paz Errázuriz (2017 National Prize for Plastic Arts) portrays a group of women deprived of liberty at the Chillán Women’s Penitentiary Center; Bárbara Oettinger focuses her gaze on the traditions originated from farmers, making a contrast with the signs of globalization manifested in the appearance and activities of various groups of young people; Andrés Figueroa presents portraits made with an analog large-format camera, which are complemented by small biographies of the people photographed, who, through their activities, trades and professions, contribute to the cultural and productive identity of the region.

Sebastián Mejía toured urban areas, registering their architecture and particular spaces, which are progressively configured according to the use that their inhabitants make of them: emblematic buildings, ruins, and the product of real estate speculation appear in the images. Fernando Melo incorporates the concern for natural and rural spaces into his work, integrating the ecological component into the exhibition, from the perspective of the depredation of natural resources and the landscape modified by humans.

“The works present in Ñuble. Portraits of the Region allow us to explore a territory in its scope and diversity, allowing us a critical observation on the problems and ways of living in this area. In that sense, the exhibition is a contribution to review and rethink in what way we want to relate to each other and build, starting from the diversity of the territories and their societies”, says Beatriz Bustos Oyanedel, Director of Centro Cultural La Moneda.

The exhibition “Ñuble. Portraits of the Region”, was organized by Centro Cultural La Moneda, with the collaboration of SEREMI de Cultura Ñuble, the Municipality of Chillán, the Heritage Unit of the Municipality of Chillán (UPA) and the CECAL of the Chillán Campus of Universidad de Concepción.
