Sitio El Olivar
MUSEO ARQUEOLÓGICO DE LA SERENA COLLECTIONThis exhibition, co-curated between Museo Arqueológico de La Serena and Centro Cultural La Moneda, focuses on the history and various excavations of this archaeological site and opens a reflection, together with representatives of organized Diaguita communities and associations, on the past, present and future of its people and the projection of the El Olivar site.
The exhibition will present different pottery pieces such as vessels, duck-jugs, ceremonial objects, fishing supplies such as hooks, tools for textile work and hunting, among others, which show the ancestral ways of life of the Diaguita people, along with some belonging to Las Ánimas cultural complex. In this way, the exhibition shows the richness of the agro-pottery cultures that inhabited and inhabit the territory that currently comprises the El Olivar site.
Sitio El Olivar. Colección Museo Arqueológico de La Serena brings together the archaeological salvages organized -on the occasion of this exhibition- in four periods: c.1930-1954, 1989, 2008 and 2010, and 2015-2017. All of them have been providing new scientific background on the past of the settlements that inhabited the territory of El Olivar, located between 2 to 4 km north of the city of La Serena, about 2 km east of the coastline and whose surface is estimated at, at least, about 35 hectares, although its geographical limits are not yet certain.
The process of participation and interculturality that is being fostered by CCLM is based on international experiences and conventions such as Convenio 169 of the International Labor Organization (ILO), which is one of the main regulatory frameworks on indigenous matters in Chile, which addresses respect for the principle of cultural integrity, which states that it will be the indigenous peoples themselves who will decide on aspects related to their cultural heritage and participation in the initiatives that involve them through representatives chosen by their communities.
